Trevor Mastrogiovanni Maintains OSU's East-Coast Connection
September 14, 2020 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State wrestling program has historically had great success taking talented wrestlers from the northeast and turning them into All-Americans and national champions.
Cowboy legends such as Jordan Oliver, Coleman Scott and Teague Moore all hailed from the northeast and won individual national championships for OSU.
Recent OSU All-Americans Nick Piccininni and Dakota Geer also came from the east coast and Trevor Mastrogiovanni is looking to be the next great Cowboy All-American from the region.
Mastrogiovanni was born in Sparta, New Jersey, on March 29, 2001 to parents Dena and David Mastrogiovanni. He started his wrestling career at just four years old and said the biggest influence on his introduction to the sport was his grandfather.
"My grandfather was the only one in the family to do sports so that was the sport we had to go into," Mastrogiovanni said. "He got me into wrestling very young and I ended up picking it up pretty easily as a young kid and I kept with it."
He attended Blair Academy in New Jersey where he finished with an astounding 96-4 record in high school.
Along with his high school accomplishments, Mastrogiovanni made a name for himself with his impressive national resumé, winning three National Prep tournament championships and two Ironman championships. Mastrogiovanni also finished as a three-time National and Fargo All-American.
Ranked No. 13 overall in the 2020 recruiting class, Mastrogiovanni committed to Oklahoma State back in 2018, but originally did not have OSU listed in his top-five college choices.
That all changed when he visited the Stillwater for the first time.
"I like it here," Mastrogiovanni said. "It's a little more laid back (than New Jersey) and the people are totally different here, a lot more polite. I saw the campus and met some of the guys and I was super excited. I had my number one choice and this place blows it out of the water, so I knew I had to come here."
Projected as a lighter-weight wrestler, Mastrogiovanni said he is excited to wrestle for coach John Smith and hopes to live up to the high expectations and contribute to the Cowboy dynasty.
"Coach Smith is awesome and obviously he's one of the best in the sport and it's awesome to wrestle under him," Mastrogiovanni said. "I've been working super hard to get in here and be that guy to make an impact right away. We've got a great team and if we all work together, we can be national champions pretty soon."
