Competition, Development Apparent in Preseason Camp
August 31, 2020 | Cowboy Football
8/31 Media Session
STILLWATER – Just 12 days away from the season opener against Tulsa, excitement continues to mount within the Oklahoma State football program.
Â
The Cowboy defense played a large part in securing wins down the stretch of the 2019 season. With 10 starters returning, coach Mike Gundy likes his defense.
Â
"We're mature on that side of the ball," Gundy said. "We have a number of players that have had quality reps in big games. I feel comfortable with where we are at from a health standpoint on that side of the ball. Hopefully they will continue to work hard as they've come together and practiced well up to this point."
Â
On the other side of the ball, the growth of quarterback Spencer Sanders is one of the storylines of preseason camp.
Â
"He is developing into a leader on our football team," Gundy said of his quarterback. "Since he is a returning starter, he understands our culture and the day-to-day operation within our program. The players respect him because of his competitive nature and he's a little different than he was at this time last year."
Â
With established playmakers such as Tylan Wallace and Chuba Hubbard, it might be hard for freshmen to get many touches. However, Gundy spoke highly of newcomer Brennan Presley's attitude and expects him to play a significant role.
Â
"He's a young player that is further along than other freshmen because he competes every day," Gundy said. "You can get him 200 reps and he is going to continue to fight and compete because he likes to play the game of football and he has a tremendous attitude. Those are key ingredients in a freshman being able to compete early in his career. I anticipate him being a factor throughout the season offensively and on special teams."
Â
With the seating capacity in Boone Pickens Stadium reduced, game day will have a different feel, but the positive energy one would expect to surround a team ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press poll remains in place.
Â
"We always use the term in our organization about controlling what we can control," Gundy said. "We can't control how many people are in the stands. I know there's been a limit put on it by the university, so I'm guessing we will max that out based on the excitement of the people who want to watch Cowboy football."Â
