STILLWATER – After an offseason full of uncertainty surrounding the college football season, Mike Gundy told media members Monday morning that a sense of normalcy has returned to the Oklahoma State football program.
Â
"We're back at it, practicing like normal with guys working hard," Gundy said. "It gets a little bit closer every day to playing a football game. Players are in a routine with school and practice. It seems like it's getting to be somewhat normal around here, which is refreshing."
Â
With the Cowboys originally slated to host Oregon State on Sept. 3, the team may have been behind where they normally are at the end of August due to the cancelation of spring practice and not being in the facility for most of the summer. Now with a revised schedule, the Cowboys have more time to perfect their craft before opening the season against Tulsa on Sept. 12.
Â
"With schools pushed back a couple of weeks from what would be a traditional start date, typical August practice sessions have been in effect now for three weeks so everybody is catching up," Gundy said. "If we had games this weekend, then I think it would look different, but with an additional two weeks of preparation, I'm going to guess that people are going to be back on track. I feel comfortable with what is happening here at Oklahoma State."
Â
The additional two weeks should be beneficial on the offensive side of the ball with Kasey Dunn taking over as the offensive coordinator. A member of the coaching staff since 2011, Dunn has received high praise from Gundy and others since taking over the coordinator position.
Â
"Up until this point his work ethic, planning ability, structure and discipline with the coaching staff and the players has been excellent," Gundy said. "He is still on a honeymoon since we haven't played a game yet. He hasn't made the calls on third down and medium or fourth down. We don't have any idea from that standpoint, but what we do know is his ability to coordinate with our coaching staff and relate with our players has been fantastic."
Â
As the team moves another week closer to kicking off its highly anticipated season, Gundy said a sense of appreciation to be able to play this season has become evident among his players.
Â
"Our players are excited about being able to play and are thankful that our commissioner and our conference were willing to push forward during this time," Gundy said. "This is something they love to do, so I do hear them talking about the positives of being able to play a season."
