Dunn, Cowboy Offense Improving Together During Fall Practice

Cowboy Offense Media Session
STILLWATER - Improving was the theme of Tuesday's media session with members of the Oklahoma State offense.
Â
A group that contains three of the most explosive playmakers in the nation and has been racking up preseason awards, but has been through two important coaching changes that took place in the offseason.
Â
In the first case wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn was promoted to offensive coordinator. He will now handle the play calling duties for the offense this season. Dunn, who joined the staff in 2011, has become one of the nation's premier receivers coaches as he has produced multiple draft picks. However, with spring practice cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dunn and the offense are still getting familiar with his play calling.
Â
"I wish I had more time through spring ball and get those extra 12 practices back," Dunn said. "The players need it and so do I. It's different making the calls and decisions on the fly, so we are working at it hard right now to make sure that I am ready to go. As much as I want the players to be ready, I want myself to be ready for this opportunity. It's time to hit that fast-forward button and get as much done as possible over the next two weeks."
Â
Dunn and the Cowboy offense should benefit from what should be an improved Spencer Sanders under the leadership of new quarterbacks coach, Tim Rattay. Joining Oklahoma State after serving as the quarterbacks coach at Louisiana Tech University and a one-year stint in the NFL, Rattay is already drawing high praise from his starting quarterback.
Â
"I feel like we've grown a very close connection," Sanders said. "He has taught me a lot of things and is slowing the game down for me a bit. He's getting me to my reads a half second faster than what I was last year and the important thing is getting depth in the pocket so I can have time to throw the ball. Honestly and truly, he has taught me a lot and I've showed it and I love it."
Â
While most of the offensive starters return from a group that ranked No. 21 in yards per game last season, multiple players are competing to start at the X wide receiver position after the departure of Jordan McCray.
Â
"Right now the one battle that I have going is that X position," Dunn said. "We need a guy out there who is going to be on the other side from Tylan Wallace. We have some good guys out there, so it is fun to watch those guys get after it. We have had some injuries up and down at that position so it's day-to-day on who is out there, but it's been good to see the competition. I'm excited to see who is going to step forward and grab that spot."
Â
With the position battle for one wide receiver spot taking place, the other slots are filled by experienced playmakers. Dillon Stoner and Landon Wolf will man the slot while superstar Tylan Wallace will return to the field after a knee injury cut his junior season short. In just eight games last season, Wallace racked up over 900 yards and eight touchdowns after a stellar sophomore season where he burst onto the scene and earned a spot as a Biletnikoff Award finalist.
Â
"He looks great," fellow wide receiver Dillon Stoner said. "He looks like his old self. The only difference is he is wearing a brace now. He looks explosive making plays and is back like he never left."
