Woods Named to Mackey Award Watch List
July 17, 2020 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Jelani Woods is one of 36 players on the 2020 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List, announced Friday by The Friends of John Mackey.
Woods is also one of four players from the Big 12 on the watch list for the award, given annually to college football's most outstanding tight end.
A junior out of Ellenwood, Georgia, Woods is coming off of back-to-back seasons of earning honorable mention all-conference honors from the league's coaches.
Originally a quarterback for the Cowboy football team, Woods moved to Cowboy back at the end of the 2017 season and has excelled since the transition.
Last season, Woods played in all 13 games for the Cowboys and started 12. He was a versatile player who caught passes and played an important role in blocking for OSU's potent rushing attack. He finished the year with 16 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown, while setting a career high with five receptions against Baylor.
As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Woods was regular weapon in the Cowboy attack before injury held him out of the final two games of the season. He played in 11 games with seven starts while making seven receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns, including a crucial score in the Cowboys' Homecoming win over No. 6 Texas.
The John Mackey Award winner will be announced and presented in December. It is given to the collegiate tight end who best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics and community values of NFL Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey. The recipient is determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Selection Committee.
