July 14, 2020 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders was one of 30 FBS players named to the 2020 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List, announced Tuesday by the Davey O'Brien Foundation.
Sanders is one of just eight sophomores on the list, which also includes eight juniors and 14 seniors. He's one of five quarterbacks from the Big 12, which matches the SEC for the highest total among all conferences.
In 2019, Sanders was voted by the league's head coaches as the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, setting an Oklahoma State freshman record by passing for 2,065 yards despite the fact that he missed the final two games of the season.
The Denton, Texas native finished the year ranked sixth nationally among freshmen with 244.8 yards of total offense per game. He was also one of only 12 freshmen nationally to pass for more than 2,000 yards and averaged 57.1 rushing yards per game, ranking third in the nation among all freshman quarterbacks. Sanders also averaged 13.32 yards per pass completion to rank second in the Big 12 and 27th nationally, and was a two-time selection as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Compiled by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee, this year's list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2020 college football season. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at an NCAA Division I institution.
Semifinalists for the award will be named Nov. 10 and the foundation will announce the three finalists on Nov. 24. The 2020 Davey O'Brien Award winner will be announced live Dec. 10 during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN, and the 44th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner is scheduled for Feb. 15, 2021, in Fort Worth, Texas.
