No. 2 Cowgirl Equestrian defeats Baylor

WACO, Texas — The No. 2 Oklahoma State Equestrian team defeated ninth-ranked Baylor, 10-8, Saturday in a competition that came down to the final two rides as the Cowgirls earned both points to secure the victory at The Willis Family Equestrian Center.
"I am so proud of the grit that our team showed today from start to finish," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "Their energy level was high from their first step off of the bus until the final score came in. This type of grit and energy is what is needed for our final meet of the year next weekend and for the postseason."
With the win, OSU improved to 9-3 on the season, including a 4-1 mark in the Big 12 as the Cowgirls maintained their spot atop the conference standings.
The meet began with a 2-2 tie in Fences. Freshman Sydney North improved her record to 7-3-1 on the season and handed her opponent, Savannah Hemby, her first loss in Big 12 competition with an 83-73 win, while Sydnie Ziegler earned her sixth win of the season and received MOP honors for the third time with an 85-40 defeat of Baylor's Caroline Fuller. Team captain Abigail Brayman tied her match 84-84, while Emma Pacyna was narrowly defeated, 78-77.
The Cowgirls took the Reining event by a score of 3-2. Hannah Lovrien won her third consecutive match with a 68.5-66.5 win, and Molly Mitchell posted a 69.5, which was enough to narrowly defeat Baylor's Georgia Smith by a score of 69.5-68. Stephanie Helsen picked up her first win of the spring with a 69-68 victory to give the Cowgirls a 5-4 lead after the first half of the meet.
The second half of the meet began with Baylor taking Flat, 3-2. Abigail Brayman picked up her third-straight win for the Cowgirls and improved her record to 7-3-1 on the season with a 78-71 win. Hannah Janson posted an 86, which earned her a huge 86-84 win over Baylor's Caroline Weaver.
The Cowgirls clinched the win by taking Horsemanship, 3-1. Emma Verplank improved her record to 9-1-2 on the season with a 74.5-0 win that tied the meet at 8-8. Cassidy Waters posted a 74, which tied Katie Davis' score and resulted in no point being given out. With the score tied at 8-8, JoJo Roberson and Harley Huff both posted 77's to win their matches and clinch the victory for OSU.
OSU returns to action Saturday at 10 a.m. for senior day at Totusek Arena as the Cowgirls take on Fresno State.
