Cowgirls Extend Winning Streak in Mizuno Classic
March 06, 2020 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team defeated Missouri State, 15-0, and Murray State 7-3 on the opening day of the Mizuno Classic to push its winning run to eight games in a row.
The No. 14/12 Cowgirls (15-5) came out of the gates swinging a hot bat against the Bears. OSU got all the runs it needed and more when the Pokes plated 12 runs in the first inning on three home runs and 10 hits. The dozen runs in the inning are two shy of the program record that was set in 2018 against Omaha when the Cowgirls scored 14 in an inning.
Junior Michaela Richbourg opened the scoring flood gate with a two-run single up the middle. The Cowgirls scored three more runs before Kiley Naomi, the leadoff hitter, came around to bat again and blasted a three-run homer. Junior Sydney Pennington followed up Naomi's home run with a blast of her own and Busby showed off her muscles as well with her second home run of the season.
In the second inning, the dynamic 1-2 duo of Naomi and Pennington homered back-to-back for the second time in the game. Pennington now has five home runs on the season while Naomi has seven, which ties her with Alysen Febrey for the team lead.
Cowgirl ace Carrie Eberle was perfect through four innings and improved her record to 8-1 with a 0.56 ERA.
"Overall, it was a really good day for us," Naomi said. "We put up a lot of hits, good hard hits. Even our balls that weren't hits were still hard and driven."
In the second game, Pennington and Febrey kept up the hot bats against Murray State. Both batters came up with run-scoring singles in the third to give OSU the early lead. After a day full of offensive explosions, it was freshman Karli Petty's home run that was the most celebrated. The Moore, Oklahoma native launched her first collegiate home run with two runners on base in the fourth inning.
"I was just trying to make sure my foot was down and I hit the ball hard," Petty said.
Redshirt freshman Kelly Maxwell added a win to her season after a solid outing in the circle. The southpaw tied a season-high with nine strikeouts and surrendered two runs on two hits. Maxwell is now 5-3 on the year with a 1.69 ERA. Senior Logan Simunek came in relief in the fifth and closed out the win for the Cowgirls for her second save on the year.
"I thought the offense was the story here today," Head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "We scored 12 in the first inning of that first game and I think that set the tone. I'm excited about the way our hitters have prepared all week long. They have really been working and really been grinding, and it is showing."
Up next, the Cowgirls host Mercer and No. 25 Utah tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, for the second day of the Mizuno Classic. Both games will be televised on ESPN+.
