December 08, 2020 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga has been named a national semifinalist for the 17th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, announced this week by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation.
The Cowboy senior is one of 24 semifinalists for the trophy, which is awarded annually to college football's Defensive Player of the Year who best exemplifies the IMPACT acronym: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. The award gives equal weight to personal character as well as athletic performance.
Ogbongbemiga has enjoyed an outstanding 2020 season, leading the team with 74 total tackles while adding 5.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Also OSU's leading tackler in six of its nine games played this season, Ogbongbemiga most recently set a school record and tied a Big 12 record with three forced fumbles in the game at TCU, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week and Pro Football Focus National Defensive MVP of the Week for his performance.
Off the field, Ogbongbemiga entered the 2020 season as a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 Team honoree, and was voted a team captain by his teammates following the 2019 season. He has also been honored with the 2019 OSU Leslie O'Neal Award (Defensive MVP) and was a second team All-Big 12 selection by the league's coaches last year. Prior to that, he was given the 2018 OSU Outstanding Special Teams Player Award.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria before moving to Houston, Texas then Calgary, Alberta before coming to Stillwater, Ogbongbemiga is one of four semifinalists from the Big 12 for the trophy.
Six finalists for the award will be announced January 8, with the winner announced at an awards ceremony on February 21 at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach. The winner's university will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund.
