Oklahoma State Post-Game Notes
Game Flow: Oklahoma State jumped out to a 13-0 lead and held a 16-7 advantage at half before TCU rattled off 14 unanswered to take a 21-16 lead in the third quarter. With the Horned Frogs seizing momentum, things favored TCU until Spencer Sanders connected with Tylan Wallace on a 55-yard touchdown pass to give the Cowboys a 22-21 lead late in the third quarter. With OSU's secondary decimated to injury, TCU responded with a 71-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a 29-22 advantage with 7:56 left. The Cowboys marched right back down the field, but an interception in the end zone dashed OSU's hopes. Two more defensive stops by TCU after that sealed the result.
Game Notes
·         The Oklahoma State defense forced a season-high five turnovers, but the offense was held scoreless on each of the ensuing possessions. The one turnover that did produce points came when defensive end Brock Martin returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. It marked the Cowboys' fifth non-offensive touchdown of the year. Tyren Irby returned a fumble 56 yards against West Virginia, Jason Taylor II returned a fumble 85 yards against Kansas State, Taylor returned a kickoff 48 yards against Texas Tech and Tre Sterling returned an interception 65 yards against Texas Tech.
·         In the last two games, the Oklahoma State defense has forced eight turnovers and accounted for 16 points – the previously-mentioned touchdown returns from Sterling and Martin and a safety from Calvin Bundage.
·         TCU hurt the Cowboys with big plays. The Horned Frogs connected on five passes of 20 yards or longer and three rushes of 20 yards or longer.
·         A handful of stats that typically point to Oklahoma State wins did not come to fruition Saturday. The Cowboys led at the half and won the turnover battle, but still lost. Entering the game, OSU was 29-4 in its previous 33 games when leading at the half and was 63-7 in its previous 70 games when winning the turnover battle.
·         With 92 receiving yards against TCU, Tylan Wallace increased his career total to 3,389. In doing so, he passed Terrance Williams from Baylor (2009-12) and Allen Lazard from Iowa State (2014-17) to take sole possession of ninth place on the Big 12 career list.
·         Cornerback Rodarius Williams set the school record for consecutive games started, as Saturday marked his 48th straight. The previous record was 47 by Russell Okung from 2006-09. Williams has started every game since 2017. His 48 consecutive starts leads all active FBS defensive backs.
·         Starting kicker Alex Hale missed the game due to injury. Without Hale, the Cowboys missed a PAT, a 37-yard field goal attempt and a 42-yard field goal attempt.
·         Playing in place of injured All-American Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown, running back Dezmon Jackson earned the second start of his career and finished with 29 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown. Jackson had 36 carries for 235 yards and three touchdowns in his debut start vs. Texas Tech last week.
·         Safety Tre Sterling was added to OSU's extensive injury list during the game. He was hurt on a play late in the first half, but did not play in the second half. Rodarius Williams also sat out the entire second half due to injury.
·         Tylan Wallace scored on a 55-yard touchdown reception with seven seconds remaining in the third quarter. He sustained an injury on that play and did not play at all in the fourth quarter.
·         The Cowboys were also without standout right tackle Teven Jenkins, who earlier in the week announced he was going to sit out the remainder of the season in order to train for the upcoming NFL Draft.
·         Cowboy back Jelani Woods had a career-long 46-yard reception in the second quarter.
·         Cornerback Thomas Harper made the first interception of his career in the second quarter.
Up Next: The Cowboys wrap up the regular season when they travel to Waco, Texas, to face Baylor at 6 p.m. CT on Dec. 12 in McLane Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 17, but a COVID issue in the Baylor football program forced the postponement.
