Cowboys Set Record for Academic All-Big 12 First-Team Honors
December 18, 2020 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team was announced Friday, as Oklahoma State set a league football record with 28 first-team selections and a school record with 43 total selections.
The 28 first-team honorees are the most by a football program in the league's 25-year history, beating the previous high of 26 set last season by Kansas State. Outside of women's track and field teams, no other team in any other sport has had 28 first-team selections. The all-sports record is 32, set by Oklahoma State women's track and field in 2019-20.
Additionally, three of OSU's first-team members were honored with a 4.00 grade point average: Matt Hembrough, Brady Pohl and Jake Schultz. It marks just the seventh time in Big 12 history that a football program has had at least three athletes with 4.00 recognitions.
With this season included, the six highest totals for first-team Academic All-Big 12 selections in OSU football history have now come in the past six seasons, as OSU had 13 in 2015, 12 in 2016, 20 in 2017, 13 in 2018, 16 in 2019 and now 28 in 2020.
With 15 second-team honorees, the Cowboys total of 43 academic all-conference honors also marked the second-most in the league this year, in addition to the school record.
Several Cowboys are receiving recognition for multiple times in their careers, highlighted by Logan Carter, Amen Ogbongbemiga, Dillon Stoner and Landon Wolf, who are now four-time first-team selections. Only eight other Cowboys have earned four academic all-conference honors, and six others have earned four first-team honors.
Brock Martin was named to the first team for a third-straight season, while Jarrick Bernard-Converse, Braden Cassity, Alex Hale, Matt Hembrough, Carson Kropp, Tanner McCalister, Relijah Sherman, and Hunter Woodard were named to the first team for a second-consecutive year. LD Brown was also a first-team pick this season and a second-team pick in 2018.
On the 2020 second team, four Cowboys were multiple-time honorees, including Cameron Murray (first team in 2017 and second team in 2019), Amadou Fofana (first team in 2019), Jake McClure (second team in 2018) and Tylan Wallace (second team in 2018).
To earn a spot on the first-team Academic All-Big 12 squad, one must maintain a 3.20 or higher GPA either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
