Luke Surber Joins Tuttle Teammate in OSU’s 2020 Class
October 05, 2020 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER — Luke Surber and Dustin Plott have wrestled together since middle school. Both top-100 recruits in the nation, the pair decided to stick together for the foreseeable future and join Oklahoma State's No. 1-ranked recruiting class.
"He committed a couple months before me, so that kind of played a role into my decision," Surber said. "I knew a few guys in OSU's class already like Trevor (Mastrogiovanni) and Konner (Doucet), so it all played a factor for me."
Surber was born in Norman, Oklahoma, on Oct. 2, 2001 to parents Matt and Deah Surber. His father Matt was an All-American wrestler at the University of Central Oklahoma and was Luke's coach at Tuttle High School.
He began his wrestling career at the age of six as his dad introduced him to the sport at a young age.
In high school, Surber dominated his competition, compiling a 155-12 record and three state championships at Tuttle to go along with the rest of his wrestling accomplishments.
OSSA named him Outstanding Wrestler for his performance at the 2020 Oklahoma state wrestling tournament.
He won the Kansas City Stampede tournament at 138 pounds in 2017 and placed as a UWW Cadet All-American in 2018. Surber was also named a 2019 Fargo All-American in addition to his All-State selection in 2020 and his All-American nominations in 2018 and 2019.
Luke was on the Tuttle High School football team, helping them to a state championship victory during the 2018 season.
At the time of his commitment, Surber was ranked No. 39 overall in the class of 2020 and said his commitment process was a straightforward one.
"Being from Oklahoma, I kind of always had that feeling I was going to come to Oklahoma State," Surber said. "It wasn't a foregone conclusion, but if I had the opportunity to go here, I was going to come to OSU."
Although he has only been with the team a short time, Surber said he already feels at home with the Cowboys.
"Everybody gets along, we're all kind of like a family," Surber said. "All the older guys do a good job of making the freshman feel welcome."
He also said growing up, he idolized many Cowboy wrestlers such as Jordan Oliver and Jake Rosholt and hopes to make an impact for OSU right away.
"My goal is to come in every day and give my best effort and help the team," Surber said. "Obviously, I want to win national championships individually and for the team so if I keep working hard, hopefully that will happen."
