No. 10 Cowgirls Fall To No. 25 Ohio State In Final Match Of ITA Kickoff Weekend

STILLWATER -Â The No. 10 Oklahoma State Cowgirls competed in the championship match of the ITA Kickoff in Stillwater on Sunday, but the team fell short in a hard-fought match against another top-25 opponent, as No. 25 Ohio State won, 4-3.
After winning its first-round match against San Diego on Saturday, the Cowgirls faced off against the No. 25 Ohio State Buckeyes in the championship match. The day began with doubles where Alana Wolfberg and Catherine Gulihur teamed up on court six but dropped the first match of the day to Kathleen Jones and Danielle Wolf, 6-0.
Oklahoma State would take the next two doubles matches to win the doubles point over the Buckeyes. No. 17 Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto defeated Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen, 6-1. Then Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Lenka Stara won their match on court two over Irina Cantos Siemers and Shiori Fukuda, 7-6(1).
Singles began with an Ohio State win on court three, as Danielle Wolf defeated No. 92 Ayumi Miyamoto in the only singles match of the day that was won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. No. 58 Siemers took down Dariya Detkovskaya, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to put the Buckeyes up 2-1. Ohio State would quickly go up 3-1 when No. 125 Kolie Allen defeated freshman Alana Wolfberg, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Lenka Stara defeated Mary Beth Hurley on court six, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, to give the Cowgirls their first singles point of the day. No. 29 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat would tie the match up at three points a piece on court two when she defeated Isabelle Boulais, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The final point was won by the Buckeyes on court one, as No. 11 Shiori Fukuda defeated No. 17 Lisa Marie Rioux, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
This is the first loss of the season for Oklahoma State, which moves the Cowgirls to 5-1 on the year. Ohio State, who was ranked No. 25 in the country going into the ITA Kickoff, now jumps to 2-0 on the year with wins against No. 24 Wake Forest and now No. 10 Oklahoma State. The win over Oklahoma State also qualifies the Buckeyes for the National Indoor Championship.
The Cowgirls will stay in Stillwater to prepare for next weekend's matches against Arkansas and Tulsa. The Cowgirls and Razorbacks will face off on Friday, Jan. 31, and will play against Tulsa on Saturday, Feb. 1 in the Greenwood Tennis Center.
