Quotes: Oklahoma State vs Texas
January 15, 2020 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton
Thoughts on the game:
"It was Texas' night, which is certainly not good for us. They blocked 11 shots and we couldn't finish a ton at the rim because of their length. I am here for the long haul. I am here to fight for these kids and help them get better. We will show up tomorrow with a good attitude and try to get ready for the next one."
On the defensive effort:
"I thought the effort was good. The execution was not great because the threes they were getting were wide open. We had multiple communication breakdowns, which part of that comes from guys playing significant minutes for the first time and they're not used to having to communicate constantly. At the end of the day, Texas was the better team tonight and they deserved the victory."
On tough breaks for the team:
"We are right in the middle of it. I told our guys that you go through things sometimes and you don't know why. We certainly have a bunch of guys who are trying to figure out how to do better. It is not a lack of effort. Those kids care as much as anybody about wanting to win, but right now we have to get a couple of things to go our way. We have to get those layups and free throws to go down in those timely situations and when we do I feel good that our mindset will be feeling good that they are going to be able to make this thing happen."
On the offense:
"I thought Avery Anderson continues to show progress. He wasn't as efficient today as he has been, but he is getting better. We got to the rim, but we missed a ton of layups. Also, you have to be able to convert at the free throw line when you get those opportunities because those are points that put pressure on the defense."
Texas head coach Shaka Smart
On the game:
"We knew Oklahoma State was going to play with a great level of aggressiveness. When we got up we knew they would be even more aggressive. They're a really good shooting team, but they haven't shot well lately. That was a huge emphasis for us was to run them off three's. For them to only get off 15 was a big victory for us and that helped win us the game."
On how Texas played:
"I think our guys activity was really good and that's what led to the 11 blocks. They're tough to guard with what they do and they definitely got in the paint a decent amount, but we helped each other. This was Kai Jones best game he played. The way he rebounded and the way he blocked really helped us. We need all of our guys in double figures. We don't have a guy that's going to score 30, so we need contributions from everyone."
On the Big 12:
"This is typical Big 12. Teams are really going at each other and there's a lot of really good defense being played. Teams will shoot the ball better. Right now defense is a little bit ahead of offense. Whenever you're playing at home or on the road, it's not about beauty points, but it's about firing away and trying to be one point better than the other team. There are teams in our league who are playing at a high level, and some who are figuring out. Any team in our league is capable of beating any team."
On Kamaka Hepa:
"He's not really known for gravity defying dunks. We put Kamaka in the lineup because he brings a unique passion and spirit to our team. He only cares about one thing. He had a career high tonight and couldn't care less, he just wants Texas to win. We want five guys out there that think like that and exhibit that spirit."
