Hubbard Named Player of the Week After Record-Setting Performance
September 30, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard picked up his second Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season Monday after turning in the year's No. 1 FBS rushing performance on Saturday.
Facing the No. 9-ranked defense in the nation, Hubbard ran for 296 yards against No. 24 Kansas State to set an OSU record for rushing yards against a ranked opponent. He surpassed both Barry Sanders (222) and Thurman Thomas (237) Saturday, and Hubbard now has the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 single game rushing performances in FBS this season.
Averaging 11.8 yards per carry on 25 carries, Hubbard's rushing yardage also marked the sixth-best single-game total in school history and the most since David Thompson ran for 321 in 1996. Only Barry Sanders and David Thompson have rushed for more yards in a single OSU game.
Hubbard reached several other milestones, as he became the first Cowboy ever to rush for 200-plus yards three times in the first five games of a season. He is just the seventh player to accomplish the feat since 2000 and the first since LSU's Leonard Fournette did so in 2015.
With a career-long 84-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 53-yard rush in the first quarter, Hubbard added to his national best 50-plus yard runs total to give him four this season. The 84-yard rush also marked the longest rush in the Big 12 this year.
After five games, Hubbard leads the nation in nearly every statistical rushing category, including rushing yards, rushing yards per game, rushing touchdowns, all-purpose yards, yards after contact (via Pro Football Focus), yards per carry (min. 70) and rushing plays of at least 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 yards.
Hubbard's rushing total of 938 yards is 284 more than No. 2 in FBS - equal to the difference between No. 2 and No. 43 in FBS. His rushing yards through five games are better than three of the past four running backs to win the Heisman Trophy, and his yards per carry total is better than all four.
The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor marks Oklahoma State's fourth weekly conference honor of the season. Hubbard was also named the offensive player of the week for his performance against Tulsa, while Kolby Harvell-Peel was named the defensive player of the week against Texas and Spencer Sanders was named the newcomer of the week after his performance against McNeese.
