Going For Six
September 17, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The complete list of schools to win five straight football games over Texas in Austin reads as follows:
That's it. That's the list.
In fact, there's only one other team beside Oklahoma State to win four straight over Texas in Austin, and that's Notre Dame, who did so over a span of 83 years, picking up victories in 1913, 1915, 1952 and 1996. So what's happening now in the Oklahoma State-Texas series is truly unprecedented.
The Cowboys downed the Longhorns on their home turf in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 and are going for a sixth consecutive win on Saturday in front of a national TV audience on ABC.
The OSU heroes have been many and the moments have been vivid – Brandon Weeden connecting with Justin Blackmon for a 67-yard touchdown pass down the sideline in 2010. Jeremy Smith going off in 2011 (seven carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns). Justin Gilbert's pick-six in 2013. Ben Grogan's game-winning field goal with six seconds remaining in 2015 and Ramon Richards' overtime interception in the end zone in 2017.
Each game during that stretch has taken its own shape, but the Cowboys have beaten Texas in a variety of ways during the current run. Some notes:

Who knows what the 2019 edition will look like, but we do know this - a sixth consecutive win for Oklahoma State over Texas in Austin would extend a streak that is already unprecedented.

Each game during that stretch has taken its own shape, but the Cowboys have beaten Texas in a variety of ways during the current run. Some notes:
Team
- Oklahoma State was the higher-ranked team in each of those five contests, with two of those battles (2011 and 2013) being ranked-vs.-ranked matchups.
- In three of the five wins, the Cowboys never trailed (2010, 2011 and 2013). OSU erased second-half deficits to win in 2015 and 2017.
- Of a possible 300 minutes of football (not counting the overtime period in 2017), Oklahoma State has trailed the Longhorns in Austin for only 39 minutes and 52 seconds.
Offense
- Oklahoma State has scored at least 30 points in four of its last five trips to Austin.
- The Cowboys have outgained the Longhorns in total offense in four of those five games and have averaged a healthy 431 yards of total offense per game during that span.
- In the last five games played in Austin, three different Cowboys have rushed for more than 100 yards against the Longhorns (Kendall Hunter, Jeremy Smith and Justice Hill) and a fourth (Clint Chelf) rushed for 95.
Defense
- In three of those five wins in Austin, Oklahoma State held Texas under 20 points.
- The Longhorns have scored a total of only 10 touchdowns in those five games, and it should be noted that three of those 10 were non-offensive touchdowns.
- OSU has limited Texas to an average of 338 yards of total offense per game.
- Oklahoma State has held Texas under 150 yards passing in three of those five games.
- Only once have the Cowboys allowed a 100-yard rusher.
- The Cowboys have forced an average of two Longhorn turnovers per game.
- The last time Oklahoma State and Texas met in Austin (2017), the Cowboys limited the Longhorns to 42 rushing yards on 33 attempts (1.3 yards per carry). The OSU defense stifled Texas all game and limited the Longhorns to a total of 13 first downs.
- In 2015, OSU's defense came to the fore again, limiting Texas to only 11 first downs.
Who knows what the 2019 edition will look like, but we do know this - a sixth consecutive win for Oklahoma State over Texas in Austin would extend a streak that is already unprecedented.
