Cowboy Cross Country Kicks Off Season With Hurricane Preview Win
August 31, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
TULSA, Okla. - The Oklahoma State cross country season kicked off this morning at the Hurricane Preview in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where the Cowboys took home a team title that was highlighted by Bryce Quigley's individual win.
Quigley finished the four-mile route in a time of 20:13 with teammates Juan Diego Castro and Adam Dayani finishing right behind him in second and third.
"They looked good," assistant distance coach Justin Duncan said. "They ran as a pack which is what we wanted them to do. Our top three guys after the second mile pushed the pace and dropped the pace significantly, but they all stuck together and finished well."
The Cowboys were running without a number of their top projected runners, but proved the program's depth with a strong showing.
"I think that winning with the team that we brought here, not our top guys, but still a solid group of guys, shows how strong of a team we are this year," Quigley said.
Quigley was the top-finisher for the Cowboys at the Hurricane Preview a year ago in a 13th-place effort. Today's time of 20:13 was 42 seconds faster than he was a year ago.
The Cowgirls placed three women in the top 15 in a fourth-place team finish on the two-mile route. Haley Geissler was the low stick with an 11th-place finish, followed by Ryan Isennock in 12th and Anna Gunter in 15th.
"We came out here to kind of go through the motions and get the first race under our belts and I think we did a good job to get that done," Duncan said.
Moving forward, the Pokes have all of September to train and get prepared for their next meet, the Chili Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on October 5.
