Dieringer Comes up Short at Final X Wrestle Off
August 17, 2019 | Cowboy Wrestling
ROUND ROCK, Texas – Former Cowboy wrestler Alex Dieringer dropped two bouts to reigning World champion Kyle Dake in a special delayed wrestle off on Saturday at Round Rock High School, narrowly missing making his first U.S. World Team.
The 79-kilogram contest was rescheduled from the original Rutgers date and moved to Texas following a request from Dake in June. Dake is ranked No. 1 in the world with Dieringer coming in at No. 4.
In the first match of the afternoon, Dieringer went in front with a point for passivity after Dake failed to score. The former Cornell wrestler scored two points on step outs and picked up another when Dieringer went on the clock for passivity, winning the bout, 3-2.
After a 30-minute break, the pair returned to the mat where Dake ran Dieringer out of bounds twice early on. In a wild exchange, Dake pushed Dieringer to the edge where the Cowboy countered and ultimately put Dake to his back. The official offered four to Dieringer and two to his opponent, but only one point was awarded to Dake.
Dieringer pushed Dake out twice, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. He dropped the second match, 4-2.
The OSU volunteer assistant completed his freestyle season with two international tournament titles at Yasar Dogu and the Dan Kolov. He claimed third at the Ivan Yarygin, won the U.S. Open and dominated Zahid Valencia in two matches at the World Team Trials.
