STILLWATER – Oklahoma State had six players taken over the final 30 rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday, bringing the Cowboys' 2019 draft total to eight.
Five of the Cowboys' eight draft picks were pitchers, with Logan Gragg, Peyton Battenfield, Brady Basso, Jensen Elliott and Jake Lyons selected. OSU position players drafted included Trevor Boone, Andrew Navigato and Colin Simpson.
OSU's eight draft picks tied for the ninth most of any Division I program in 2019. All eight of the Cowboys drafted were selected in the first 30 rounds, tying them for the fifth highest total in Division I.
Additionally, the eight draft picks tied for the second-most for OSU during the seven-year head coaching tenure of Josh Holliday; the Cowboys also had eight players drafted in 2015 and tied a program record with 11 draft picks the following year. The Cowboys have had 45 players drafted under Holliday, 13 of those in the top 10 rounds.
Gragg (8th round) and Battenfield (9th round) were picked on the draft's second day, and Basso was OSU's first selection on Wednesday when he was taken in the 16th round by Oakland.
A junior southpaw, Basso is 4-5 with a save and a 5.82 ERA in 43 career appearances, seven of those starts. In 13 outings this season, the Pearland, Texas native is 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.
Next up for the Cowboys was Boone, an All-Big 12 First Team selection as a junior this season who leads the Cowboys with 20 home runs and 54 RBIs to go along with a .292 batting average. The center fielder was an 18th-round pick of Colorado.
Boone, who hails from Tulsa, has played in 143 games in his three seasons in an OSU uniform, and has posted a .273 batting average, 33 homers and 96 RBIs.
Up next, Elliott was taken with the first pick of the 19th round by Baltimore. The Cowboys' junior right-hander has started 37 career games over parts of four seasons at OSU and is 22-6 with a 3.52 ERA; he ranks 10th on the school's all-time wins list.
An All-Big 12 Second Team selection this season, Elliott is 10-3 with a 3.33 ERA and has tallied three complete games in 16 starts.
Navigato has been a mainstay in the Cowboys' lineup in his first season in Stillwater, and the junior shortstop was chosen in the 20th round by Detroit.
A native of Riverside, Calif., Navigato is hitting .296 with 12 home runs, 14 doubles and 42 RBIs and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors after transferring from Cuesta College.
Lyons was drafted for the second time in his career when he was tabbed in the 22nd round by Baltimore; the right-hander was also a 22nd-round pick of San Diego in 2017 following his freshman season at Weatherford JC.
In his first season in Stillwater, Lyons is 5-2 with a save and a 4.94 ERA in 19 appearances, 17 of those out of the bullpen, and the junior has racked up 50 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings.
OSU's final '19 draft pick was Simpson, who was a 29th-round choice of Colorado. A three-time All-Big 12 performer, the senior has played in over 200 career games and slugged 46 homers, which ranks 10th on the program's all-time list.
