Fix Claims 57-Kilogram Spot on United States World Team

LINCOLN, Neb. – Cowboy wrestler Daton Fix claimed a spot on the 2019 United States World Team on Saturday evening in Lincoln, Neb., beating Thomas Gilman in the first and final matches of the best-of-three series at Final X. It marks the redshirt freshman's first time making the senior level freestyle team after he came up just short at Final X in 2018.
The opening period of Fix's first bout with the 2017 World silver medalist got off to a slow start, but with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first, the Cowboy took Gilman down and earned two more for exposure. Midway through the second period Fix notched another takedown and took the bout, 9-1.
The Sand Springs, Okla. native dropped a tight second bout, 3-2, after being penalized and giving up a takedown. He rebounded in the third.
To start the final match, both competitors were warned for passivity. Fix went on the clock late in the first but notched a takedown and carried that lead to the second. The score tied back up at 3 before Fix scored another takedown late in the period. The former Hawkeye's corner used a challenge, which gave Fix the 6-3 win.
With the win over the 2017 World silver medalist, Fix made his sixth-consecutive World Team. The 2019 World Championships are set to take place in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, beginning Sept. 14 and running through the 22nd.
