STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Cowgirl tennis team won a tightly contested, top-20 bout against the Miami Hurricanes, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center to advance to the third round of NCAA Championship action.
"As a coach, you are excited when your kids pull through during those tough moments because those adverse situations challenge you as a competitor," OSU head coach Chris Young said. "That's what you train for… to have the confidence to build for those moments. I thought our kids went for it and played the points on their terms, and ultimately that's what's gratifying as a coach."
Marina Guinart clinched the dual in dramatic fashion when she defeated the Canes' Yuna Ito, 6-4, 7-5. The Cowgirl senior moved to 18-3 on the year with the victory and her fifth-consecutive win.
Cowgirl Bunyawi Thamchaiwat was the first to grab a singles point for OSU, shutting out Daniella Roldan in two sets. Alongside partner Tamara Arnold, Thamchaiwat also helped the Pokes clinch the doubles point in a 7-6(4) tiebreaker over Ito and Lucia Marzal.
The Cowgirls (21-7; 7-1 Big 12) dropped individual bouts on courts one and two just before Sofia Blanco rallied to take her match in two sets. The senior was down two points in both before coming back to win, 6-4, 7-5. She picked up her second win of the weekend and improved to 18-3.
Doubles pair Blanco and Catherine Gulihur delievered No. 13 tandem Daevenia Achong and Daniella Roldan its second loss of the weekend in a tempo-setting 6-4 win. It marked the pair's 13th win of the year.
"In doubles, we made it interesting. We had control all through three doubles and just didn't really play with the aggressive mentality that got us the lead. Give a lot of credit to Miami, they competed really hard and they made us earn it."
