May 31, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER—Sinclaire Johnson was named the Midwest Region's Women's Track Athlete of the Year, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Friday.
Johnson is the first Cowgirl to win the award and is the first OSU athlete to be recognized as a Midwest Region Athlete of the Year since 2016 when Nick Miller won for his outstanding performances in the hammer throw.
Johnson is leading the nation in the women's 1,500 meters after running a school-record time of 4:09.50 at last weekend's West Regional. She went wire-to-wire to win the quarterfinals and advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin.
At the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, Johnson competed in the 800 meters and won both of her races comfortably. She took home the conference crown with a time of 2:04.79.
Johnson also helped anchor two victorious relay teams at the Drake Relays. She ran the final leg of the 4X800- and 4X1,600-meter relays, and both squads helped complete a sweep of the distance relays at Drake. It wad the third time in program history the feat has been accomplished. No other program has done it more than once.
Johnson's anchor leg in the 4X800-meter relay clocked in at 2:02.79. Her performance helped set the NCAA lead and school records in the 4X800-meter relay. If Johnson's anchor leg came in an individual 800-meter race, her time would have been ranked fourth in the country this season.
The junior out of Longwood, Florida, is undefeated in the five races she has competed in this season with only the NCAA Outdoor Championships remaining.
Johnson's next task is to take on a stacked field in Austin for the NCAA Championships. The semifinals of the women's 1,500 meters are at 7:16 p.m. on Thursday.
