Show Blasts Cowgirls Past No. 5 Florida in WCWS Opener
May 30, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma State softball star Samantha Show captivated a national audience and powered the Cowgirls to a 2-1 win over fifth-seeded Florida on Thursday during the opening day of the 2019 Women's College World Series.
Show hit a pair of home runs to post the Cowgirls' only two runs and pitched a seven-inning gem, which saw the right-hander allow only one run on six hits. She is the first pitcher in NCAA history to hit two home runs in a WCWS contest.
Show's first home run sparked a sold-out crowd at Hall of Fame Stadium, as she torpedoed an opposite-field shot into the bleachers in right-center field during the game's opening frame.
Florida responded with a solo shot of its own in the home half of the second inning, but that was all that the Gators could muster off Show.
The East Bernard, Texas, native grabbed the game by the scruff after that, as she kept the Gators' offense in check and then cemented her name in World Series lore with a towering solo home run in the top of the sixth inning that she capped by tomahawking her bat toward the Cowgirl dugout in celebration.
The two long balls were Show's 19th and 20th home runs of the 2019 season, extending the OSU single-season record she set earlier in the campaign. Fourteen of Show's home runs have come when OSU was either tied or trailing – including two against Florida – and 11 of them have been either game-tying or go-ahead efforts.
The senior's two home runs were Oklahoma State's only two hits in Thursday's matchup with the Gators.
The win over Florida was OSU's first victory at the Women's College World Series since 1998.
OSU is slotted in the second game of the winner's bracket on Friday night, where it will face either No. 8 Alabama or top-seeded Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 8:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
