May 28, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER—The Cowgirls' 1,500-meter and 800-meter groups were ranked in the top five of the Event Squad rankings for the Oklahoma State track and field teams, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
Event Squad rankings combine the top-four season bests from a team in a single event to produce a single performance, similar to a relay. Performances are ranked against other teams across the country.
The Cowgirls' 1,500-meter runners were ranked No. 1 in the country after three runners went sub-4:16 in the event at the NCAA West Regional.
Sinclaire Johnson's 4:09.50 led the way in Sacramento. She set the NCAA leading time in the 1,500 meters as well as setting the OSU school record. Jenny Martinez recorded a new personal-best time of 4:12.92, which bettered her previous personal-best by nearly six seconds. Molly Sughroue qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 4:15.52 to set a new season best.
The Cowgirls also took claim to the No. 5 spot in the #EventSquad rankings. The OSU women's top four in the 800 meters consists of Johnson, Sughroue, Martinez and Kaytlyn Larson. Johnson's Big 12-championship winning performance leads the way for the Cowgirls.
The USTFCCCA also released the National Track and Field Rating Index on Tuesday. The Cowgirls came in at No. 25 and the Cowboys were ranked 35th. The OSU women jumped 14 spots from last week and the OSU men moved up seven spots after the West Regional.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls each send four athletes to next week's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
