Cowgirls Clipped by No. 4 Florida State
May 24, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 13 Oklahoma State softball team continued to produce some high-drama action during this year's NCAA Tournament, but were bested by No. 4 Florida State, 4-1, in game two of the Tallahassee Super Regional Friday night.
The loss drops OSU to 43-15 this season and forces a game three, which will be contested at 11 a.m. CT Saturday morning. It is the Cowgirls' first winner-take-all contest in the NCAA Tournament since a loss to No. 1 Florida during the 2017 NCAA Gainesville Regional.
Oklahoma State struggled offensively Friday, mustering just four hits off of Florida State starter Meghan King, and the Cowgirls scored their lone run on a defensive throwing error in the bottom of the third. The run was a solid response to FSU's four-run frame in the top of the inning, but the Pokes were kept in check beyond that.
The Seminoles weren't much more effective at the plate though, as Samantha Show and Logan Simunek combined to allow only four hits over seven innings.
Show continued to tear through one of the nation's premier offenses, but a couple of untimely walks in the third, as well as two base hits, saw FSU plate all four of its runs and seize control of the game. Prior to the rough third inning, Show had retired the first six Seminole batters she faced, extending her streak to 24-straight batters retired going back to last night's contest.
She was replaced by Simunek in the fourth inning, and the spinny right-hander shut the door on FSU's powerful offense.
Simunek allowed only two hits in her four shutout innings in the circle, and struck out three Seminoles in the process. The junior has now allowed only 10 earned runs in 35.1 innings pitched (1.98 ERA) against top-10 competition since the start of the 2018 season.
The Cowgirls and Seminoles will collide one more time tomorrow in Tallahassee, with the winner securing a spot in next week's Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT on ESPN.
