Cowboys Grab Lead At NCAA Championship

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Oklahoma State's men's golf team opened play at the NCAA Championship on Friday with a 290 to stand alone atop the leaderboard at Blessings Golf Club.
The top-ranked Cowboys used their 2-over tally to finish a shot clear of Stanford and two strokes ahead of Auburn and California at the par-72, 7,550-yard layout.
Cal's Collin Morikawa used an opening 67 to set the pace in the individual race.
Austin Eckroat was one of three players to finish the day at 3-under 69 and tied for second place. Riding the momentum of the play that earned him a berth in the U.S. Open field earlier this week, the OSU sophomore carded four birdies against one bogey during his opening round.
With the Cowboys opening on the back nine, Eckroat opened with a birdie at the par-5 10th before moving back to level for the day with a bogey at the 13th. He closed out his opening nine with five consecutive pars.
Eckroat reeled off three consecutive birdies to open his second nine before coming in with six consecutive pars for a 3-under 33 side.
After going out in 4-over 40, sophomore Matthew Wolff responded with a closing nine of 33 to claw back to 1-over for the day and tied for 21st place with a 73. Wolff carded birdies at Nos. 2, 4, 6 and 8 on his way to his 3-under front side.
Joining Wolff at 1-over was Zach Bauchou. The senior opened with a bogey at the 10th before carding birdies over three of his next six holes.
Junior Viktor Hovland signed for an opening 75 to stand in a tie for 36th place, while senior Hayden Wood posted a 78 to come in tied for 87th place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 6:50 a.m. (CST) and will be grouped with Arizona State and Wake Forest. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
