OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma State's Jensen Elliott and Peyton Battenfield combined for a three-hit shutout to lead the third-seeded Cowboys to a 5-0 win over No. 2-seed Baylor Thursday night in a Big 12 Baseball Championship winner's bracket game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The win was the fifth in a row for the 11th-ranked Cowboys, their longest winning streak of the season, as they improved to 34-17. OSU advances to Saturday's semifinals and will play the winner of Friday's elimination game between Baylor (34-16) and TCU (30-25) at 12:30 p.m.
For the second time in the past five days, Elliott took the mound against the Bears, his 15th start of the season. The junior right-hander cruised through six innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking one en route to improving to 9-3 on the season.
Battenfield was dominant over the final three innings as he struck out six of the 10 batters he faced and allowed only one hit to earn his second save and secure OSU's sixth shutout of the season.
Colin Simpson and Trevor Boone each drove in two runs for the Cowboys, while Andrew Navigato was 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Cowboys got the scoring started in the fourth. Simpson led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on Navigato's single. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Boone came through with a two-strike single up the middle to bring home both runners and give OSU an early 2-0 advantage.
The Pokes added to their lead in the sixth when Simpson belted his second home run of the tournament and 14th of the season, a two-run shot to straightaway center field. Up next, Navigato reached base on an error and came around to score from second on Carson McCusker's single to mark the third OSU run of the inning and make the lead 5-0.
Elliott held the Bears hitless over the first four innings before a single by Davis Wendzel to lead off the fifth. All three of the Bears' hits on the night were singles.
With his fourth-straight win, Elliott improved to 21-6 in his OSU career, leaving him one victory shy of 10th place on OSU's all-time wins list.
