OKLAHOMA CITY– A four-run sixth inning propelled third-seeded Oklahoma State to a 5-2 victory over No. 6 seed TCU Wednesday night in a first-round Big 12 Championship matchup at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 33-17 on the season, while the Horned Frogs fell to 29-25 on the year. OSU advances to face second-seeded Baylor in a winner's bracket game Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Colin Simpson and Trevor Boone homered in the win, and Andrew Navigato had a two-hit performance that included an RBI double in the pivotal sixth inning to give OSU a lead that it never gave back.
Parker Scott got his sixth starting nod on the mound for the Cowboys and earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. The sophomore southpaw allowed just one run on four hits over six innings while striking out four and walking one. Scott's only blemish came when he allowed a solo home run to TCU's Hunter Wolfe in the third.
Simpson got OSU on the scoreboard to open the bottom of the second inning as he smacked his 13th home run of the season, an opposite-field solo blast to left to put the Pokes up, 1-0.
The lead didn't last long, however, as Wolfe evened the score in the third with a solo shot of his own down the left-field line to get the Horned Frogs on the board. Scott answered back strong by striking out the next two batters in the frame.
The Cowboys regained the lead with their sixth-inning rally. Navigato doubled to left-center field to plate Cade Cabbiness and get the scoring started, and Simpson followed by driving in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Hueston Morrill.
Boone put an exclamation point on the inning when he delivered a towering, no-doubt two-run home run to deep left field. For Boone, it was his 19th round tripper of the season, the most by a Cowboy in a season since Corey Brown slugged 22 in 2007.
Logan Gragg came on in relief of Scott in the seventh and worked two scoreless innings for OSU, striking out three and walking one before handing the ball over to teammate Ben Leeper for the ninth. Leeper surrendered a solo home run to Jake Guenther with one out in the inning before recording back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
