May 21, 2019 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State's Trevor Boone collected All-Big 12 Conference First Team honors, and Colin Simpson earned all-league accolades for the third time in his career to lead a group of 10 Cowboys earning 2019 recognition from the league today.
Boone was the Cowboys' lone All-Big 12 First Team selection, while OSU placed four on the All-Big 12 Second Team as Simpson, Christian Funk, Andrew Navigato and Jensen Elliott earned that distinction. Four Pokes – Peyton Battenfield, Ben Leeper, Carson McCusker and Hueston Morrill – were named honorable mention all-conference, while Morrill and Brett Standlee were chosen for the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Boone has emerged as one of the nation's top sluggers in 2019. The junior from Tulsa has smashed a Big 12-best 18 home runs to go along with a .297 batting average, and he leads the Cowboys with 46 RBIs and 17 multi-hit games. Boone's .674 slugging percentage is tops in the conference, and he ranks second in total bases with 118.
With a pair of three-home run games this season, against Kansas and Texas, Boone set an OSU record as he became the first Cowboy to ever record three three-homer games in a career.
Another of the Big 12's top sluggers, Simpson earned All-Big 12 Second Team plaudits for the second consecutive year after collecting honorable mention status in 2017. The senior, who has started all 49 games for the Cowboys and spent time at catcher, designated hitter and in left field, earned a spot on the all-conference team as a utility player.
Simpson is hitting .246 with 12 homers and 45 RBIs and did the majority of his damage in Big 12 play, smashing 10 homers and tallying a league-best 27 RBIs in conference-only games.
Elliott has thrived as the Cowboys' Friday night ace as a junior, turning in an 8-3 record in 14 starts while posting a 3.86 ERA. The right-hander has tossed three complete games and leads OSU with 81 2/3 innings pitched and 52 strikeouts.
All three of Elliott's complete games have come in Big 12 play, including back-to-back wins against Oklahoma and Baylor, and he owns a 5-3 conference mark.
An infielder who transferred to OSU following a two-year stint at Cuesta CC, Navigato sports a .289 batting average and is one of three Cowboys with 12 home runs on the season.
Navigato has started 46 games this season, 31 of those at shortstop and 15 at third base, and he turned in a .302 batting average, eight homers and 21 RBIs in league play.
Funk is one of two Cowboys to start all 49 games this season, and the senior has become a fixture at the hot corner. Along with a .249 batting average, the Californian has slugged 12 homers and driven in 40 runs, and he leads OSU with 37 walks and six sacrifice flies while ranking second with 10 multi-RBI efforts.
Junior right-handers Battenfield and Leeper have bolstered the OSU bullpen in 2019; Leeper leads the club with 23 appearances while Battenfield ranks just behind him with 22.
Leeper has tallied a team-high six saves, the most by a Cowboy pitcher since 2016, and owns a 3-2 record and a 2.70 ERA.
Battenfield, who was also an honorable mention all-conference pick as a sophomore, is 3-3 with a save and is tied for the team-lead with 52 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .189 against him.
OSU's leading hitter with a .322 batting average, McCusker also ranks in the top 10 in the Big 12 in doubles (16), triples (3) and slugging percentage (.566).
A starter in 40 games, McCusker hit .313 with three homers and 20 RBIs in conference play, and the junior earned honorable mention status for the second-straight year.
Morrill has had an immediate impact in his first season in Stillwater, starting 45 games, most of those at second base, and hitting .270 with a team-high 10 stolen bases. He's also tied for the team lead with 17 multi-hit games, and he ranks second with 15 doubles.
A redshirt freshman, Standlee has made 16 appearances on the mound, including nine starts, and is 2-1 with a save and a 4.50 ERA. The right-hander, who made seven starts in conference play, ranks third on the Cowboys with 48 strikeouts.
The 2019 All-Big 12 teams and awards are voted on by the conference's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
