Dieringer Claims World Team Trials Title, Headed to Final X
May 19, 2019 | Cowboy Wrestling
RALEIGH, N.C. – Former Cowboy wrestler Alex Dieringer staked claim on the second 79-kilogram spot at Final X: Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J., next month with back-to back wins over Zahid Valencia (Sunkist Kids) at the World Team Trials on Sunday.
Dieringer earned a spot in the World Team Trials best-of-three finals match at the U.S. Open in April when he won the 79-kilogram title. In Vegas, the former Poke outscored his five opponents at the event, 53-0, a pace he surpassed in his two bouts on Sunday.
In a rematch with Valencia, Dieringer took round one in a first-period, 12-1, technical fall. He avenged last year's two losses in dominating fashion, taking out Valencia in the sound bout, 12-2.
The Final X matchup is the last step of competition to claim a World Team spot. Dieringer looks to make the Senior team for the first time when he competes in the best-of-three series against four-time World Team member and 2018 World Champion Kyle Dake on June 8.
Cowboy Daton Fix also owns a spot at Final X: Lincoln, where he will contend for a second-consecutive year in a three-match series with World Team member Thomas Gilman. The event in Lincoln, Neb., is set for June 15.
