STILLWATER – In the final scheduled regular season series at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, Oklahoma State clinched a series win over 12th-ranked Baylor with a 5-4 victory Friday night.
Max Hewitt's first-career home run was the difference, and Jensen Elliott tossed his second-straight complete game as the 13th-ranked Cowboys improved to 32-17 overall and 14-9 in Big 12 Conference play.
Elliott's effort marked the first time since Thomas Hatch in 2016 that an OSU pitcher has posted consecutive complete games. The junior right-hander collected his third-straight win to improve to 8-3 on the season as he struck out five and did not issue a walk while allowing seven hits.
Hewitt came on as a pinch hitter in the second inning for an injured Hueston Morrill and went 2-for-3 and the plate, and he was one of three Cowboys, along with Colin Simpson and Trevor Boone, to homer on the night. Boone also finished with a game-high three RBIs.
OSU jumped out to an early lead as Simpson crushed his 12th home run of the season in the first inning, a solo shot off the scoreboard in right-center field.
Baylor (33-15, 14-8) answered in the second, rallying for three runs on four hits to go up 3-1, but Boone smacked his Big 12-best 18th round tripper of the season in the bottom of the frame to cut the Bears' lead to one.
The visitors plated their final run in the third on a homer by Richard Cunningham that extended their advantage to 4-2.
Some clutch two-out hitting tied the game in the fourth as, with the bases full of Cowboys, Boone delivered a two-RBI single to center field to make the score 4-4.
Hewitt's decisive home run came in the fifth off BU reliever Ryan Leckich, an opposite-field shot over the left-field wall.
For Hewitt, the contest marked his first multiple at-bat game since April 2, and along with the homer, he also walked and recorded a single.
With the one-run lead, Elliott was dominant on the hill down the stretch. He hurled six-straight shutout innings to close out the game, allowing just two hits over that span, and was the benefactor of several standout defensive plays by his middle infielders — Hewitt at second base and Andrew Navigato at shortstop.
The Cowboys will conclude the regular season Saturday with the series finale and the last scheduled regular season contest at 39-year old Reynolds Stadium. The game has been rescheduled for 2:05 p.m. due to the chance of inclement weather.
