May 12, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
NORMAN, Oklahoma -Â Oklahoma State's Ryan Smeeton capped off day two of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a win in the 3,000 meters steeplechase at John Jacobs Track and Field Complex to become OSU's second Big 12 champion this weekend.
Â
"It was Ryan's first Big 12 win, but it's been coming and he's been working hard for it," said head coach Dave Smith. "It couldn't happen to a better guy. I really think it will boost his confidence and help propel him into the postseason."
Â
Smeeton was able to pull away from Texas' John Rice over the last 1,000 meters to claim his first Big 12 crown. Smeeton is no stranger to success in the event, as he holds the top mark in the NCAA in the steeplechase so far this season.
Â
Big 12 indoor long jump champion Jacob Fincham-Dukes turned in a fifth place finish in the long jump with a mark of 7.79m/25-6.75 to earn All-Big 12 status and Torrey Hickel threw a personal-best mark of 17.43m/57-2.25 to get on the podium for the Pokes with a sixth place finish.
Â
In the women's 800 meters prelims, Sinclaire Johnson and Kaytlyn Larson qualified for tomorrow's final with the fastest two times overall. Aaliyah Birmingham followed suit by putting down the fastest overall mark in the women's 400 meters to put herself in tomorrow's final.

Â
In the pole vault, Allie Stern turned in a notable performance for the Cowgirls by breaking her own school-record that she set earlier this season.
Â
Two Cowboy multi-athletes earned spots of the podium in the men's decathlon. Cole Verble was seventh and Jake Dyer was eighth. William Edmonds won both the 400 meters and the 800 meters in the event, but narrowly missed the podium with a ninth place finish.
Â
In the 400 meters prelims, two Cowboy freshman turned in impressive performances. Ashton Hicks qualified for tomorrow's final with the third-fastest overall mark, and LaKyron Mays turned in the seventh-fastest time, also qualifying for the final.
Â
Isaiah Priddey and Garrett Calhoun each qualified for the 1,500 meters final tomorrow and Calahan Newsome made the 400-meters hurdles final.
