TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State extended its Bedlam Series winning streak to nine games Friday night at ONEOK Field as the 16th-ranked Cowboys bested Oklahoma, 5-1.
Jensen Elliott tossed a complete game, and the Pokes smacked four home runs, two of them off the bat of Christian Funk, as OSU improved to 29-16 overall and 11-8 in Big 12 Conference play.
Elliott was dominant once again on the mound as he improved to 7-3 in his second complete game performance of the season. The junior right-hander kept the Sooners off the scoreboard through the first 8 1/3 innings and finished the game with five strikeouts and only one walk. He allowed just five hits and induced 13 ground ball outs.
Funk was one of three Cowboys to homer in the contest, with Colin Simpson and Andrew Navigato also going deep. Funk, Simpson, Trevor Boone and Alix Garcia each had two hits to combine for eight of OSU's nine hits in the contest.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead in their first, smashing three consecutive home runs to take a 3-0 advantage.
Funk got the long ball parade started, smashing his 10th homer of the season to right field. Simpson followed with his ninth round tripper of the season before Navigato deposited a Nathan Wiles pitch into the bullpen in right field, his 12th long ball of the season.
The outburst marked the first time since 2006 that OSU has recorded three consecutive home runs when Ty Wright, Shelby Ford and Tyler Mach achieved the feat on Feb. 24 in a game against Western Illinois in Stillwater.
In the fifth, another solo shot by Funk extended the OSU lead to 4-0.
Elliott kept the Sooners hitless through the first 4 1/3 innings before a single by Tyler Hardman got OU off the snide.
OSU's final run of the contest came in the ninth. After a leadoff walk to Carson McCusker and a Trevor Boone single, Bryce Carter laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Up next, Alix Garcia worked a nine pitch at-bat that ended with an RBI single to left field to push the Cowboys' advantage to 5-0.
The Sooners (30-19, 8-11) plated their only run in the ninth, getting a pair of singles to open the inning before a one-out sacrifice fly by Hardman.
The Bedlam Series shifts to Oklahoma City for Saturday's game, which will be played at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark with first pitch at 7:05 p.m., before concluding Sunday in Norman at 2:05 p.m.
