STILLWATER – The No. 16 Oklahoma State softball team completed a three-game sweep of Kansas Saturday with a 7-3 victory over the Jayhawks at Cowgirl Stadium.
OSU (29-11; 7-2 Big 12) has won all 11 of its meetings with the Jayhawks during Kenny Gajewski's four seasons as head coach.
"It was a good weekend for us, bouncing back after two straight losses," Gajewski said of the series sweep. "We're doing what we need to do in conference play and that's winning series, and sweeping them when we can. I'm proud of this team and the way they're grinding. I thought we played pretty well today. Really proud of how (Logan) Simunek and Gabby (Sprang) pitched today. I know they weren't as sharp as they would've liked to be, but they got the job done."
The Cowgirls scored at least one run in each of the first five innings of Saturday's contest to rack up the entirety of its seven-run output against the Jayhawks.
Sydney Pennington, batting in the cleanup spot, supplied the first run of the day with an RBI double to the center-field wall in the bottom of the first. Pennington finished 3-for-4 with two doubles at the plate Saturday.
In the second inning, Mady Lohman supplied the offense with a two-run home run to left center, making it a 3-0 lead in OSU's favor. It was Lohman's first career home run and her second extra-base hit against the Jayhawks this weekend.
Kansas plated three runs in the top of the third to level the score, but Lohman's fellow freshman, Kiley Naomi, drove home the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded infield single. OSU scored three runs over the final four innings after Naomi's effort, highlighted by Rylee Bayless' solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.
Gabby Sprang earned the victory for the Cowgirls in the circle, as she allowed only one hit in two innings of relief work. Sprang's record now sits at 5-0 during her first year at Oklahoma State.
Behind Sprang, Samantha Clakley closed out the game, as she pitched the final two frames to clinch the series sweep. Clakley, the reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, has not allowed an earned run in her last 16 innings of work.
The Cowgirls will continue Big 12 play in their next contests, as they visit Iowa State for a three-game series with the Cyclones that begins Friday in Ames.
