LAWRENCE, Kan. – In the first match of Big 12 Championship quarterfinals, the Oklahoma State women's tennis team swept Kansas State, 4-0, on Friday morning at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence.
The No. 2 seeded Cowgirls improved to 19-6 on the season with their second win of the year against the Wildcats, which positions them just one win shy of a fifth-consecutive, 20-win season. The Pokes have advanced to the semifinals at the conference tournament in each season since 2013.
"I thought the girls came out really focused today in doubles and set the tone," coach Chris Young said. "They did all the things that we talked about prematch that we wanted to do starting this tournament. In singles I thought we just came out and executed. A little difficult conditions with the wind… and Kansas State played with good energy, but overall I thought our girls executed and competed well.
In doubles play, Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Tamara Arnold took their match first on court three against Wildcats Ioana Gheorghita and Maria Linares, 6-1. No. 21 Sofia Blanco and Catherine Gulihur followed with a 6-3 defeat of K-State's Margot Decker and Anna Turco.
Despite windy conditions, the Cowgirls came out strong in singles, notching three straight wins to secure the victory. Guilhur clinched the match for OSU, besting Ines Mesquita, 6-3, 6-4, after trailing in the second set.
Arnold defeated Gheorghita on court six, 6-2, 6-1, picking up her 10th singles win of the year. On court four, No. 93 Marina Guinart bested Karine-Marion Job, 6-3, 6-1.
The Cowgirls are slated to take on the winner of Kansas and TCU tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in the semifinals match.
