STILLWATER – Kansas posted a walk-off win over Oklahoma State Saturday as the Cowboys suffered a 5-4 defeat at Hoglund Ballpark.
With the loss, OSU fell to 21-12 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12, while KU is 18-16 and 3-8 in conference play. The two teams will play the series rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Cowboys looking for their first series win in Lawrence since 2007.
Parker Scott turned in an impressive performance out of the OSU bullpen on Saturday, tossing four innings and striking out a career-high eight, which tied for the most strikeouts in a game by a Cowboy pitcher this season.
Offensively, the Cowboys managed just five hits while striking out 15 times and leaving seven runners stranded on base.
Logan Gragg took the loss on the mound as the junior right-hander allowed one run on three hits in 1 1/3 innings to fall to 1-3 on the season.
After mashing a school-record 12 homers in Friday's opener, the Cowboys picked up right where they left off in game two as Christian Funk smacked a two-run shot to right-center field in the first inning before Colin Simpson followed with a blast just inside the right-field foul pole to put OSU up 3-0.
KU cut into that lead in the second, plating its first run on an RBI double from Benjamin Sems. The Jayhawks then tied the score at 3-3 in the third with a long ball of their own as Conner VanCleave delivered a two-out, two-run homer over the right-field wall off OSU starter Joe Lienhard.
With KU starter Ryan Zaferjahn silencing the OSU bats after the first inning – the right-hander racked up 14 strikeouts over five-straight shutout frames – the score remain tied until the fifth when KU scored an unearned run on a sacrifice fly to go up 4-3.
OSU faced the one-run deficit until the eighth. After an Andrew Navigato double, Bryce Carter singled to put Cowboys on the corners with one out. Navigato then came home with the tying run on a wild pitch to knot the score at 4-4.
With two on and two outs in the eighth, OSU failed to bring home the go-ahead run when Cade Cabbiness flied out to center field to end the inning.
After going down in order in the ninth, OSU saw Gragg surrender back-to-back hits with one out in the bottom of the inning to put Jayhawks on second and third. That brought Ben Leeper out of the bullpen, but Dylan Ditzenberger greeted him with the game-winning single just inside the right-field line.
