Gundy Meets With Media Following 11th Spring Practice
April 10, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma State football team held its 11th practice of the spring Wednesday afternoon, wrapping up a two-hour session at the Sherman E. Smith Training Center. Coach Mike Gundy met with media after the workout to talk about the team's development. A few of his comments:
Mike Gundy
Opening Statement:
"Another good practice. I mentioned to the team that I appreciate their effort. I like our coaching, constructive criticism and the accountability that we are offering our players. Their attitudes are great. Both quarterbacks are continuing to get better. They are still making mistakes, but overall they are getting quality work and splitting reps. For the most part, it's the same as what it was a week ago this time. We are going to let them scrimmage on Friday and play a little bit more. We continue to get better in all areas. We are excited about where we are at. We just have to keep pushing hard. We have a lot of things going on in the community in the next couple of weeks. We are excited about getting out and doing some things that will excite the fans."
On his relationship with the coordinators:
"I think the chemistry with Jim Knowles is further ahead because he was here last year. He has a good feel about who we are and what direction we need to go. Sean Gleeson knows what we do and our terminologies. In the last three practices, the majority of our work has been done unscripted so both coordinators had to call it based on what happens in the practice. I haven't seen any change in the tempo so I think it has been going pretty well."
On the competitions at different positions:
"There is a lot of fire. We have good wideouts and well-experienced corners, so it's on every day. I actually slow down in the scripting in those particular positions because I'm concerned about the hand-to-hand combat that's going on at those positions. The interesting side this year has been the O-line and D-line competition with the youth because these guys are all new. There's some serious combat and hand-to-hand combat there worth watching. I've enjoyed seeing that and watching them compete."
On what the quarterbacks can learn during the scrimmage:
"A bunch. They are still babied a little bit right now based on the way practices are set up. They are on their own Friday, so we will see how they do. That should be the first organized practice where we can see how much they actually know."
On the coaches practicing with headsets:
"We've been on headsets for two weeks now. I needed to see Sean (Gleeson) operate the tempo of our offense without a script. When you can't follow the script, you got to think about all those different things. So for the past six practices, we've been on the headset for the majority of those practices. I think it has been beneficial for the organization."
