Fincham-Dukes, Cowgirl DMR Earn Top-Four Finishes
March 08, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Jacob Fincham-Dukes and the women's distance medley relay team earned All-America honors for the Oklahoma State men's and women's track teams.
The Cowgirls raced hard in a tough field of teams and finished the race in third place. They set a school record with a time of 10:55.01.
Kaylee Dodd split 2:05.16 in her final collegiate race. Her 800-meter leg was the second-best of the night.
OSU Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Dave Smith said it was a special race to watch, especially because of the senior class.
"I'm really proud of them," Smith said. "They've been here five years and have worked really hard. They've come a long way from where they started four or five years ago. It's incredible and a testament to their hard work and belief in each other."
Jacob Fincham-Dukes earned his fourth All-American honor in the men's long jump. He finished in fourth with a mark of 7.94m/26-0.75 only three centimeters behind the winner, LSU's Rayvon Grey.
The Leeds, England, native wasted no time, setting his fourth-place mark on his first legal jump.
Smith said Fincham-Dukes is a competitor and proved that today.
"His second jump was his best jump and that's what he does," Smith said. "He puts pressure on people to jump well. (It's crazy) to think you can jump 794 centimeters and lose by only three and the margins of error are so slim."
Ashton Hicks finished in 14th in the 400-meter semifinal. Hicks was forced to run in the outside lanes with about 50 meters left when Virginia Tech's Jacory Patterson fell in front of him.
Despite the adversity, Hicks and Smith came out with a positive attitude on the freshman's race and future.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls have a week off before returning to action at the Arkansas Spring Invitational on March 22 and 23.
