Cowgirls Comeback to Sweep Wichita State
March 27, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 21 Oklahoma State softball team rallied from a four-run deficit to knock off Wichita State, 9-6, at Wilkins Stadium Wednesday night and sweep the teams' 2019 home-and-home series.
OSU (24-9; 2-1 Big 12) has now recorded six come-from-behind victories this year. Wednesday's triumph was the Pokes' first comeback win since a 7-6 series-clinching victory at No. 24 Oregon on March 9.
"It wasn't the way we wanted to start, but I'm really proud of this team for the way they continued to fight and claw back," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "It was an ugly game except for our offense. We found out ways to make some plays late and just continued to be aggressive at the plate, and it paid off. Wichita State always plays us tough, and credit them and the way they're coached, but I'm just excited to get out of here with a win and get back into Big 12 play."
The Shockers twice put OSU on its heels early Wednesday, as they opened up a 4-0 advantage in the second inning, and stretched the lead back out to three after the Cowgirls answered with a three-run inning in the top of the third.
With the scoreboard reading 6-3 in Wichita State's favor, Oklahoma State continued to be relentless at the plate and scored six unanswered runs over the last four innings to cap their comeback win.
Chyenne Factor and Michaela Richbourg were the prime suppliers of Oklahoma State's offense Wednesday night, as they combined to drive in five runs and scored twice.
Factor went 1-for-3 with two walks and a two-run home run that floated beyond the center-field wall in the top of the third inning. Richbourg, meanwhile, continued to tear the cover off the ball, belting two line-drive singles back up the middle before capping her impressive day at the plate with a two-run home run off the left-field foul pole in the top of the sixth.
It was Richbourg's second career three-hit game, and it came just 13 days after her first such effort during OSU's 16-1 win at Central Arkansas on March 14.
OSU also got big contributions from Rylee Bayless and Kiley Naomi at the top and bottom of the order, respectively. The speedy tandem combined to go 3-for-6 at the plate, walked three times and scored four runs between them. Both recorded doubles during Wednesday's contest.
Defensively, the duo combined to turn three double plays, with Bayless starting two 5-4-3 efforts, and Naomi notching a 6-3 solo display in the top of the seventh. OSU's three double plays ties the program's single-game record, which was set against Missouri State on March 15, 1997.
Wednesday marked Bayless' first action at third base this season. She started in right field, but transitioned to third in the home half of the fourth inning.
Logan Simunek and Samantha Clakley were OSU's most effective pitchers in the midweek matchup, with Simunek earning her fifth win of the season after not allowing an earned run in a 3.2-inning relief effort. Clakley, meanwhile, collected her first save of the season after recording the game's last six outs in a 9-6 game.
The Cowgirls now turn their attention toward a high-stakes weekend of Big 12 play, as they host No. 9 Texas in a three-game set at Cowgirl Stadium starting Friday night at 6 p.m. Friday's contest will be OSU's first home game since its March 6 outing against WSU.
