STILLWATER – Oklahoma State completed a series sweep of Kansas State on the opening weekend of Big 12 Conference play for both teams as the Cowboys posted an 8-4 win in Sunday's finale at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the win, OSU improved to 15-7 overall and 3-0 in the league. The sweep marked the first time the Cowboys have swept their season-opening Big 12 series since they did it at Kansas State in 2016.
Jake Taylor smacked a pair of solo home runs Sunday, while Colin Simpson also homered and drove in a pair of runs. Andrew Navigato added two RBIs for the Pokes.
Parker Scott recorded the first win of his career as the sophomore southpaw came on in relief and kept K-State (11-13, 0-3) off the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
After the Cowboys rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, Jake Lyons came out of the bullpen and dominated K-State's lineup over the final five innings to secure the win and earn his first-career save.
Lyons retired 14-straight Wildcats after entering the game before giving up a two-out single in the ninth. But the right-hander, who finished with four strikeouts, got the next batter to pop out to give OSU the win.
The Wildcats tagged OSU starter Brett Standlee for two runs in both the first and second innings to take an early lead.
Carson McCusker provided the Cowboys' first run of the game with a two-out RBI single in the first to make the score 2-1, and Taylor led off the second with his first home run of the season before a sacrifice fly by Hueston Morrill later in the inning cut the K-State lead to 4-3.
The fourth proved to be the decisive frame and helped OSU record its ninth come-from-behind win of the season, with all three of the victories over K-State being the comeback variety.
With one out in the inning, Alix Garcia singled, and Morrill followed with a double to put two Cowboys in scoring position. Up next, Navigato brought home both runners with a single to give OSU its first lead at 5-4. Simpson then added to the advantage with his second homer of the season, a no-doubt blast over the right-field wall to extend the lead to three.
The Cowboys collected their final run in the seventh when Taylor once again delivered an opposite-field round tripper to right field to put OSU up 8-4.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when the Cowboys host Bedlam-rival Oklahoma in a non-conference game at Reynolds Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
