Postgame Quotes: OSU vs. Kansas
March 02, 2019 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton
On the team's effort:
"I'm really proud of those guys. Through a really disappointing, from a results perspective season, to give everything they have to Oklahoma State. I couldn't be more of a team because they inspire me every day, and that is why it is hard for me to get down on them because I see them come in and work every day."
On Cam McGriff's game:
"We didn't have as much of a flow offensively, but he was a big key for us today. I was really proud of his effort, especially coming off some really tough games for him offensively."
On Curtis Jones' aggressiveness:
"He played really aggressively. It is what we talked about for two days. In games like this when your back is against the wall, you have to come out fighting. He is one of those kids that took that to heart, and it showed today."
On Yor Anei's contributions:
"He was really locked in defensively, giving us a presence inside. He just continues to evolve. We get excited about what he can become if he keeps the right mindset. As a staff we are dedicated to making him better, and he will be a joy to coach over the next three and a half years."
On the biggest difference between the two teams:
"They made plays and we didn't. They had a couple possessions that we just came up empty on. We got it to Yor (Anei) in the paint and he missed, Ice (Isaac Likekele) got to the rim and missed one. He got in the paint and he didn't look like he knew what to do. It was a matter of those guys not being in that situation before. It showed why they win the league so often because they are comfortable in these situations."
OSU junior forward Cam McGriff
On the difference in playing Kansas a second time:
"I think our aggressiveness, coming out early and trying to set the tone and feeding off of the fans and the crowd (made today different). Those things definitely helped us."
On playing close games against the Big 12's top teams:
"Our mentality and working hard in practice every day (has allowed us) to compete. That's what Coach (Boynton) told us the whole week, we just need to go out there and compete at a high level."
On Lindy Waters's shot at the end of the game:
"We want him to shoot that 10 times out of 10. It was a great look, Coach (Boynton) drew up a good play, it just didn't go our way."
On the state of the team:
"We just need to keep working hard and building our foundation, brick-by-brick. If we come out and continue to play like we've been playing, good things will come. We don't take any moral victories, but we can definitely say we're headed in the right direction. Good things will come."
OSU Junior guard Curtis Jones
On his mindset in today's game:
"I was just trying to be aggressive. My teammates were looking for me. I was trying to provide a spark off the bench and then keep it going. The fans were great too."
On his confidence level after making shots:
"I try to be steady and go out there with the same mentality, especially in the last two games. We've been working hard in practice and that builds confidence too."
On the team returning next season:
"It's exciting. We don't take moral victories, but this group has definitely grown a lot. We've been through a lot this year which will help us finish the year strong and go into next year with a great mindset."
On the importance of Cam McGriff and his leadership:
"Cam is one of the most vocal leaders on our team. (Cam) keeps everybody accountable. (Cam) is a guy that we lean on, also with Lindy and Thomas. They are guys I go to ask questions and learn how to be a leader myself."
Kansas head coach Bill Self
On Quentin Grimes:
"I thought he played well the entire game, it was one of his better games. He shot the ball well and he was aggressive downhill. Had a couple of nice passes that we didn't convert for points. That [last shot] was his biggest shot he has made this year. He played great defense on Curtis Jones."
On hustle plays:
"I don't know if [hustle plays] set the tone. We had opportunities to score to cut it when we were down five and we didn't. Then we got into a little bit of rhythm and went up seven. I thought we got onto the floor today than we have in a while. That was important. It sets the tone for everything."
On Oklahoma State:
"OSU played great. They shot it unbelievable and made hard shots. They played terrifically and Curtis Jones played out of this world. He was fabulous."
Kansas forward Dedric Lawson
On Quentin Grimes:
"Quentin played great tonight. He started the game off with tremendous confidence and it carried over and that's something we need him to do every game. He played good defense too. He was clicking on both ends and he got the stops that we needed it."
On making a run while Yor Anei is off the floor:
"They went with a smaller big and we went more through the inside for the mismatch. We got out in transition and got some easy 3-pointers and easy buckets. I think that changed the game a lot."
On making hustle plays:
"Those are winning plays that coaches talk about: diving on the court, giving up your body and just playing hard. I think our team did a pretty good job down the stretch closing the game and just playing hard and finishing possessions."
Kansas guard Quentin Grimes
On making the hustle plays:
"Just knowing how important this game was for us going in. I just knew that I had to play well and I didn't want to lose the game."
On starting the game with more confidence:
"Just preparation. Just getting extra shots after practice. We have been clicking as a team in practices and when we play good as a team, we play good as individuals."
On the improvement of his game:
"Especially on the defensive end. Just worrying about what I can control on the defensive end. If I play well on the defensive end, I know it can translate over to the offensive end. Everybody has a lot of faith in me on the offensive end, they know what I can do."
On the team's effort:
