STILLWATER – Oklahoma State came up short of its third weekend series win of the season Saturday as the 19th-ranked Cowboys fell to Iowa, 3-2, in the rubber game of the series at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Following a series in which each game was decided by one run, the Cowboys fell to 6-4 on the season. Iowa is also 6-4.
Neither team managed much offensively in the finale as both recorded four hits, with OSU also leaving 14 runners stranded on base. Colin Simpson was 1-for-4 for the Cowboys and collected OSU's lone RBI.
Jake Lyons suffered the loss on the mound to fall to 1-1 after coming on in relief of starter Mitchell Stone, who was outstanding in his third outing of the season.
Stone worked seven innings, the longest by an OSU pitcher this season, and the redshirt freshman allowed just two hits while striking out four. The southpaw retired the final 16 batters he faced in order, and the lone run he surrendered was unearned.
The Hawkeyes plated that run in the second when, with runners on the corners, Stone uncorked a wild pitch to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
That score held until the seventh when OSU finally got on the scoreboard. Hueston Morrill drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to third with one out following a sacrifice bunt by Max Hewitt and a wild pitch. Following another walk, Simpson tied the score with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 1-1.
After the third walk of the inning, the Cowboys plated the go-ahead run when Iowa shortstop Tanner Wetrich committed a throwing error.
The 2-1 lead did not last long, however, as the Hawkeyes tied the score in the eighth on Mitchell Boe's two-out, RBI double that fell just inside the left-field line.
In the ninth, Iowa DH Lorenzo Elion smacked a one-out triple as he lined a ball to left field that got under and past a diving Simpson. Up next, Austin Martin lifted a fly ball to McCusker, who made a strong throw to the plate from right field but was just late of nailing a sliding Elion as he scored what proved to be the winning run.
Down to its final out in the bottom of the inning, OSU brought the winning run to the plate following an infield single. But Cade Cabbiness struck out to end the game as UI's Grant Leonard picked up his second save of the series and third of the season.
OSU concludes its eight-game homestand Tuesday when the Cowboys take on Wichita State at 4:05 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium.
