Three Records Fall on Day One of Busy Weekend
February 08, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER— Ashton Hicks, Jacob Fincham-Dukes and Aaliyah Birmingham set school records on the first day of a packed weekend for the Oklahoma State track and field teams.
Hicks was the fifth athlete to break an OSU school record this season. He set the 400-meter record in a time of 46.31. His fourth-place finish at the Texas Tech Shootout beat out Timmy Thomas' 28-year-old record.
At the Texas Tech Shootout, Hicks wasn't the only one to set a school record. Aaliyah Birmingham broke her own record in the 60 meters, as she finished her preliminary race in 7.35 seconds, a time that beat her previous record by seven-hundredths of a second.
Jacob Fincham-Dukes also bested his own school record in the indoor long jump. He jumped 7.87m/25-10, breaking his previous record by one centimeter. Earlier this season, he set the 60-meter hurdles record.
Isai Rodriguez and Sinclaire Johnson were also in top form at the Husky Classic in Seattle.
Rodriguez ran the 3,00 meters in a time of 7:54.33, and he crossed the line in eighth place. He finished behind some of the nation's best distance athletes such as Oregon's Cooper Teare and Texas' Alex Rogers as well as professional athletes like Oklahoma State alum Craig Nowak of the Furman Elite.
Johnson also ran in the 3,000 meters. She crossed the line in 9:10.53 and earned a 13th-place finish. She was behind Bowerman watch list honorees such as Oregon's Jessica Hull and New Mexico's Ednah Kurgat.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Dave Smith said he thinks his athletes performed well despite some unexpected circumstances.
"I was really proud of our kids," Smith said. "We had some horrible travel delays and then right as we landed, we found out the meet got condensed into one day. That could have been tough, but they responded well. We had some big PRs from a lot of our kids, I could go on and on about who ran well for us."
At the Texas Tech Shootout, Hicks wasn't the only one to set a school record. Aaliyah Birmingham broke her own record in the 60 meters, as she finished her preliminary race in 7.35 seconds, a time that beat her previous record by seven-tenths of a second.
In Lubbock, Texas, for the Texas Tech Shootout, Megan Mann finished as the runner-up in the pentathlon, scoring 3,341 points. She won two of the five events composing the pentathlon.
In the throws, Jocelen Ruth led a trio of Cowgirls to a 5-6-7 finish. She took fifth with a mark of 16.40m/53-9.75. Baylor Nelson and Hannah Bradford finished behind her with marks of 15.98m/52-5.25.
The action resumes on Saturday at the Texas Tech Shootout, Iowa State Classic and Don Kirby Elite. Updates can be found @run4okstate on Twitter.
