February 14, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER—Six individuals and both the men's and women's squads of the Oklahoma State cross country teams grabbed All-Academic awards, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association announced Thursday.
The top three Cowboys at the NCAA Championships were honored for their academic success. Isai Rodriguez, Ashenafi Hatte and Luis Martinez received All-Academic awards.
The Cowboys top trio matched their academic performance on the course in 2018. Rodriguez finished fourth at the NCAA Championships, which was the highest finish by any Cowboy in program history. Hatte also earned his first Division I All-American award with a 27th-place finish at the national meet. Martinez consistently scored for OSU and finished fourth at the Big 12 Championships.
The Cowgirls also earned three individual All-Academic honors. Grace Baker, Sinclaire Johnson and Taylor Somers all were honored for their performance in the classroom.
Johnson was the Cowgirls' best runner during the 2018 cross country season, finishing first for OSU in every race. She placed 48th at the NCAA Championships, just eight spots away from an All-American honor. Somers and Baker were both All-Big 12 cross country runners, as they finished ninth and 15th.
Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls were honored as All-Academic teams. The Cowgirls have been an All-Academic team for 16 consecutive seasons and the Cowboys have been honored for their academic accomplishments in 20 of the past 21 years.
