Cowgirl Softball Announces 2020 Schedule
December 06, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team announced its 2020 schedule on Friday.
Fifth-year head coach Kenny Gajewski and the team are coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history with a 45-win campaign, the most since 1994, and a Women's College World Series appearance, the program's first since 2011. The Cowgirls reestablished OSU as one of college softball's powerhouse in 2019, and will now look to repeat the same level of success this year.
On the Cowgirls' 2020 regular-season slate, 24 matchups are against teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season. 10 of those showdowns come against super-regional squads from a year ago, and five games will see OSU face off against teams that appeared in the 2019 WCWS.
OSU opens its 2020 season with a three-week road trip beginning on Feb. 7-9 with five games at the Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Next up, the Cowgirls travel to Florida on Feb. 13-16 to clash with the nation's best in the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational before wrapping up the long road trip at the UAB Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama from Feb. 21-22.
At the SPC Elite Invitational, the Cowgirls will be challenged with five tough games on the schedule; highlighted by a couple of marquee matchups against Minnesota and Alabama, two teams that advanced to the 2019 WCWS. The other three games will pit OSU against Virginia Tech, South Florida and Missouri, all three teams made the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Cowgirls return home after a two-week-long road trip and enjoy a short break before playing host to three consecutive tournaments: The OSU/Tula Invitational from Feb. 28-March 1, the OSU Mizuno Classic on March 6-8 and the Cowgirl Invitational from March 13-15.
In the OSU/Tulsa Invitational, OSU fans will get a chance to cheer on the Cowgirls at Cowgirl Stadium as they take on Mercer, Murray State, Wichita State and NCAA Tournament teams Louisville and Drake. Also on the agenda, is a duel against the Oregon Ducks, who have reached the WCWS four times in the past six seasons.
Up next, the Pokes travel to Georgia for a five-game road trip in Atlanta, Georgia from March 18-21. They will be up against Georgia, Kennesaw State, Georgia Tech twice and South Carolina.
A road contest against in-state opponent Tulsa on March 25 will signal the beginning of the conference portion of the 2020 schedule.
OSU begins conference play at home in Stillwater this year, with the Baylor Bears coming to town on March 27-29. In the past nine games against Baylor, the Cowgirls boast a 7-2 record, including a 21-2 beatdown last year that tied a program-high for runs scored.
After the conference home opener, the Pokes then make way to Wichita, Kansas on April 1 for a midweek matchup against Wichita State.
Continuing with the trend of playing in the state of Kansas, the Cowgirls battle Kansas in Lawrence on April 3-5. OSU looks to extend its 11-game winning streak, which started in 2016, against the Jayhawks.
The Cowgirls return home and host Iowa State from April 9-11 for the third conference series of 2020. The last time OSU dropped a series against the Cyclones was in 2013, the Cowgirls have tallied a 16-3 record since.
OSU will host Tulsa on April 15 for its second showdown against the Golden Hurricane in a midweek game. John Bargfeldt, a long-time head coach of Tulsa for the past 14 years, is now the assistant coach with the Cowgirls.
After playing their final non-conference regular season game of 2020, the Cowgirls head south to the Lone Star State to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders from April 17-19 and Texas Longhorns on April 24-26.
Last year's series against the Red Raiders was one for the ages, with OSU sweeping the series by winning each of the three games by a margin of just one run. Last year's hero, Samantha Show, now a student assistant with the team, put the icing on the cake with a walk-off home run in the final game of the series.
The Cowgirls defeated the Longhorns three times last season, including another walk-off in Stillwater and a postseason victory in the Big 12 Championships.
Saving the best for last, OSU rounds out the 2020 regular season with Bedlam on May 1-3. Game one and three against Oklahoma will be in Norman while game two will be held in Stillwater.
Postseason play gets underway at the Big 12 Softball Championship in Oklahoma City on May 8-9 with NCAA Regionals beginning May 15. The Women's College World Series is set to begin on May 28 at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
