Hubbard Named Offensive Player of the Year; Five Cowboys Are All-Big 12
December 04, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard was named the 2019 Big 12 Offensive Player of Year Wednesday, while quarterback Spencer Sanders was honored as the 2019 Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and five total Cowboys received All-Big 12 team recognition.
Hubbard, who is also a finalist for the 2019 Doak Walker Award and a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, is the seventh conference offensive player of the year winner in OSU history, joining Terry Miller (1976 and 1977), Thurman Thomas (1985 and 1987), Barry Sanders (1988) and Justin Blackmon (2010).
Sanders is the fifth OSU player to become a conference offensive freshman of the year. The others are Andre Richardson (1994), Tony Lindsay (1997), J.W. Walsh (2012) and Justice Hill (2016).
The all-conference first team includes Hubbard, whose recognition marks the third-consecutive year an OSU running back has been included on the first team, and safety Kolby Harvell-Peel, who was also an honorable mention for the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Hubbard was one of just three total players to be unanimously selected to the first team.
Three Cowboys earned second-team All-Big 12 honors, including wide receiver Tylan Wallace and linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Amen Ogbongbemiga. Wallace was a first-team honoree in 2018, and still earned second-team honors in 2019 despite missing the final four games of the regular season.
Additionally, several Cowboys earned at least one vote to pick up honorable mention status for awards and All-Big 12 recognition, including Matt Ammendola (PK & Special Teams Player of the Year), Israel Antwine (DL & Defensive Newcomer of the Year), Trace Ford (DL & Defensive Freshman of the Year), A.J. Green (DB), Kolby Harvell-Peel (Defensive Player of the Year), Tom Hutton (P), Teven Jenkins (OL), Marcus Keyes (OL), Tre Sterling (DB), Dillon Stoner (WR & KR/PR), Johnny Wilson (OL) and Jelani Woods (TE).
Selections for conference individual awards and all-conference teams are made by the league's 10 head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players.
