KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas netted a golden goal with one minute remaining in the second overtime as top-seeded Oklahoma State fell to the Jayhawks, 2-1, in the semifinals of the Big 12 Soccer Championship Friday at Children's Mercy Victory Field.
The loss snapped the ninth-ranked Cowgirls' eight-game winning streak as they dropped to 15-2-3 on the season.
OSU outshot the fifth-seeded and 21st-ranked Jayhawks 24-15 in the match, with 10 of those attempts on goal. Both teams recorded six corner kicks.
The Cowgirls needed just 65 seconds to take a lead, and it was Gabriella Coleman who put OSU on top, collecting a great pass from Kim Rodriguez and sending it in top shelf near post. The goal was Coleman's eighth of the season, which ranks second on the team, while Rodriguez collected her seventh assist.
Coleman's goal marked the fastest in Big 12 Championship history, besting the previous mark by seven seconds. That record had stood since 2007 when Texas' Emily Anderson scored 1:12 into the title match against Texas A&M.
OSU's lead would not last long, however. In the seventh minute, Kansas got on the board when Samantha Barnett found the back of the net from 10-yards out to tie the score at 1-1.
The score remained tied at the break despite OSU outshooting the Jayhawks by a 9-3 count in the opening 45 minutes. The Cowgirls nearly went back on top in the 29th minute, but a shot by Olyvia Dowell was saved off the line by a KU defender.
OSU continued to control the attack after intermission and created numerous shots resulting in several near misses.
A prime opportunity came in the the 64th minute when Dowell broke loose past the KU defense to create a one-on-one chance with KU goalie Sarah Peters. But Dowell's first shot was saved by a charging Peters before Dowell's rebound attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
Regulation ended with the teams still tied 1-1, and OSU would record five shots in overtime. The Cowgirls' best opportunity in extra time came in the second OT period when Jaci Jones blasted a shot that a diving Peters was able to knock away at the last second.
The Jayhawks' winning goal would come off a set piece following an OSU foul when Isabella Cavalcante sent a ball into the box that Eva Eliasdottir converted for her first score of the season.
OSU now awaits the announcement of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship field, which will be Monday at 3:30 p.m. A live video stream will appear on the front page of NCAA.com.
