Updating the Special Teams
November 08, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team has had a great showing on special teams this season, ranking among the national leaders in several categories.
Here's a look at some of the highlights:
Category Rank Value
Punt Return Defense Team - No. 6 1.13 yards per return
Field Goal Percentage Matt Ammendola - No. 9 93.3% (14-of-15)
Punt Returns Dillon Stoner - No. 23 9.1 yards per return
Kicker Matt Amendola, punter Tom Hutton and kicker/holder Jake McClure have all been dependable, with Ammendola being named a Groza Award finalist earlier this week. He was also named a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is given to the best player in the FBS who began his career as a walk-on.
Ammendola has made 14-of-15 field goal attempts this season, Hutton has allowed just 1.13 yards per punt return, and McClure's directional kicking on kickoffs has prevented long returns. Long snapper Matt Hembrough has also snapped without incident on each snap this season.
On the coverage units, Philip Redwine-Bryant, Kanion Williams and Bryce Balous have led the way, each recording at least eight special teams tackles on the year.
