Updating the OSU Defense: A Look Back at the Past Two Games
November 06, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – With an open date Saturday and three regular season games to go, the Cowboy defense has a chance to build on a strong showing over the past two weeks and improve OSU's spot in the pecking order for a 14th consecutive bowl game.
Looking back over the past two games, the OSU defense has put up some impressive numbers:
On top of that, the Cowboys have allowed less than 250 total rushing yards over the past two weeks, marking the fewest in any two-game stretch since games two and three last season vs. South Alabama and Boise State.
Individually, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez and safety Kolby Harvell-Peel have earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors each of the past two weeks, as Rodriguez scored the game-winning touchdown on a pick-six at Iowa State and Harvell-Peel forced three turnovers against TCU. Harvell-Peel also set a school record in the Iowa State win with six pass break ups – five of which he had by halftime.
Several others have contributed to the turnover numbers, as Tre Sterling, Amen Ogbongbemiga, Jarrick Bernard and Tre Sterling have all intercepted passes. Seven players have helped fill the sack column, including Rodriguez, Israel Antwine, Cameron Murray, Devin Harper, Jayden Jernigan, Mike Scott, and Tyler Lacy.
With so many players contributing, there is no doubt that it has been a team effort over the past two games. The next month provides an opportunity to keep the momentum going and lay a solid foundation for next season, as OSU's defense features only one senior in its starting lineup.
