Gundy Meets with Media
November 05, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy met with members of the media Tuesday after practice to discuss the team's status during the open week. Some of his comments
On what the team is working on in practice:
"The veterans are not getting a lot of work. They are trying to rehabilitate their bodies. The guys who haven't played that much in the games, as well as the redshirt players, got a lot of coaching today. All the varsity coaches worked with those guys and the veteran guys got a little bit of work. We're really focusing on trying to get the veterans' bodies back but also bringing the young guys along."
On filtering different players into the game:
"There are some guys that we're looking at this week who could get in on special teams and potentially to be a backup. We're in games now where you have to figure if they are competitive. You can't really adjust a lot with your ones and twos at this point, but there are some young guys who are catching our eye. We'll make that decision by Thursday, we've been working a few guys and if we feel like they can help us, we'll work them in on special teams."
On the atmosphere since last week's win
"It always helps to win, we talk about it constantly. I had a discussion with them on Sunday that they were successful, everybody was excited, but now it's time to go back to work. We have to have the same frame of mind every Sunday, and they've done that. It always helps, everybody feels good when you have success."
On the defensive line:
"With the three down fronts that are popular in this league the difficult side of it is whether you can get enough pressure on first down passing. It is not easy because there are five guys blocking three, so those guys have a difficult job and have to get pressure on the quarterback because guys in this league are so good and those guys can sit back and wear you out. We work hard on that and get better and better, and there are young players that are maturing as the season goes on. I'm really excited about next year because everyone is back, but they are considerably better now then they were at Oregon State."
On Trace Ford:
"He's been averaging 25 plays and had 54 at Iowa State, and I think he had over 50 in this game. They're giving him more plays as he matures."
On Kolby Harvell-Peel:
"He and Tre Sterling both have turned into special players. His ability to break to the ball and break up passes and his ability to know when to go where, and what to do has gotten so much better. We started to see him make a lot of plays in the bowl game and it has carried into this season."
On Braydon Johnson being moved to kick return:
"LD Brown was a little banged up, so we put Braydon back there to give him a shot. He's obviously fast and if you hit a crease and you are fast then it's a good play on kick return. We're increasing his workload based on the success he's had and his ability to handle himself on and off the field. He's done really well with that this year. We're going to leave him there and let him do it."
